Toddler Tuesday - the plan

Happy New Year!! I took a break from the Toddler Tuesday Series over the holidays and I am so glad to be posting again!!  I am on the lookout for some more guest posters on the topic of raising toddlers - please email me if you are interested!!

Life on the Parsons Farm

As I have mentioned here before, our journey to parenthood was not what I expected it to be.  We have battled with Infertility for nearly 6 years and adopted our sweet baby girl in 2013.  I have had 4 miscarriages and its been difficult.  With all this being said Thomas and I had ample time to discuss our parenting strategies, discipline, and plan.  We had these conversations organically at first when we met up with friends who had small children as well as my work with nursery and elementary aged kiddos.  Then as we got into our adoption paperwork we were "forced" to come up with a plan to share with potential birthparents in our portfolio.  We also had these conversations with both of the birth-moms we interviewed with (the first one changed her mind after about a month).  The good thing is that both Thomas and I have a very similar view on raising children so that makes our parenting goals more easily achievable.  I really feel that parenting should be a partnership between husband and wife (or mother and father) where both parents take on the accountability for both fun and discipline.

I feel that it is so important to go into parenting and raising a child with a plan.  I have had the opportunity, as a former teacher, to fully grasp the idea of objectives, learning targets, and discipline.  I see a lot of similarities between parenting and teaching - parenting just takes MUCH longer than the one year we have with our students.  As a teacher I have had many many students grace my classroom, with lots of different personalities, behaviors, moral convictions, and character. I also had the chance to speak with many of my students parents and get clued in on what sorts of things they do at home.   I have had some stellar students who I hope that Ellie will act similar to one day, as well as some naughty students where I hope Ellie NEVER behaves that way.  So I run a pretty tight ship at home with the expectations I have of Ellie and her actions/behaviors. Because ultimately I believe that our children are a direct reflection of ourselves.

First of all like most parents I hope that I raise Ellie to have a "better life" than I had, but more importantly I hope that I raise Ellie to be a better person than me. I want her to be a good contribution to society, a good friend, a leader, to be respectful and respected, and to be gracious. I hope that I can raise her to have a good head on her shoulders and to be kind, to stand up for what is right, and to show compassion for others. I want her to know how loved she is, the importance of family and friendships and to know the LORD.

So how do I achieve these? I don't have all the answers but I know I need to be confident in my choices and decisions.

PROactive vs REactive
This is easier said than done, it takes a lot of attention and foresight. Being proactive in parenting is to try and acknowledge a situation or behavior before it becomes dangerous or out of hand.  Being reactive in parenting is not being aware or waiting for the disaster to happen and then deal with it.  I think being aware of your child and the surroundings are so important.  For example; if you have breakable items in your home, like a table lamp, and your child is swinging and throwing pillows around the room, the proactive parent would tell the child to stop and redirect their energy to an appropriate activity, where the reactive parent would wait until the lamp got knocked over and then get mad.  The proactive parent is addressing an unsafe activity and teaching about respecting things.  The reactive parent is getting mad about the broken lamp and not teaching about the destructive behavior.

Rules & Boundaries
Children thrive on these because it gives them a sense of responsibility and they can know what to expect.  Obviously rules and boundaries are different in every household depending on what is important to the parent. Respect for people and things is hugely important to me, so most of my rules focus on that aspect.  It is easier to set rules and boundaries in the beginning than to add them later on down the road. So Ellie has A LOT of rules and boundaries. At this point in Ellie's life she has a lot of rules, there are many things in our house that she cannot touch, she isn't allowed to climb or walk on the furniture, she cannot go in certain rooms unattended, and she cannot get too physical with us when playing. Some of these will diminish over time as she becomes more in control of herself and understands cause and affect. Please don't get me wrong, Ellie does have quite a bit of freedom and is a very happy girl.

Off Limits
Like I mentioned above there are many things in our home that are "off limits".  This serves two purposes.  First, many of the things in my home belonged to my mom and/or they are breakable.  To preserve these items Ellie is not allowed to touch them until she has learned to be gentle and cautious.  She gets to learn how to be gentle with the toys that she does get to play with. Second, since I take Ellie out shopping and over to other people's homes I want her to understand the concept of things being "off limits" so that she can be respectful of others belongings.  She can't learn this concept if we don't enforce it and are consistent at home about things that she can and cannot touch.  I probably say "look with your eyes, keep your hands off" over 100 times a day.  I know that as she gets older she will need less reminding, a heavy workload now will mean it will be easier as she gets older.

Manners
If there is one thing I learned being a teacher is that many kids are forgetting to use their please and thank yous (among other manners).  I want to raise Ellie to remember to always say please when asking for something and to also say thank you.  To help teach Ellie this behavior I make sure to model it for her all the time, whether I am asking her or someone else to do something "please".  She is doing great with remembering to say Thank You or "taka".  Table manners are also something that I feel are important.  We decided that we were going to take Ellie out with us to any restaurant we choose, but in order to make the visit pleasurable for all parties involved we have to make sure to have the same rules at home. So we are working on sitting still in your seat during the whole meal and waiting until everyone is done, not throwing our food (or utensils) and cleaning our hands/face/table when we are done.  So far her favorite part is the napkin.  I am lucky that the kiddos I get to Nanny for also have good table manners instilled in them so that Ellie can learn from them. I am happy to say that Ellie does well in restaurants and she gets lots of chances to practice this behavior since we try to go out to eat at least 4 times a month.

Consistency
Ahh consistency is key and the most important part of parenting.  It can also be the most challenging.  Thomas and I are in constant communication about our parenting so that no matter who is watching Ellie we are both on the same page and enforcing the same behaviors.  We discussed early on that if we could help it we didn't want Ellie to be attached to her pacifier (save for sleeping) or suck her thumb/fingers.  So it took a lot of awareness, paying attention, and consistency on both our parts to keep Ellie's thumb out of her mouth when she was an infant (praise the lord that our nanny was on the same boat as us and was consistent about thumb sucking as well!!) our teamwork and consistency worked because Ellie doesn't suck her thumb and is not attached to her paci. Although she does like her paci a lot she is able to fall asleep at naps or bedtime without it.  She knows that it stays in the crib and very willingly puts it back if she finds one laying around...of course we have to prompt her to do it!!

One thing that I was curious about with raising/parenting children vs. being a teacher was how you can incorporate new rules or boundaries as issues arise.  I knew as a teacher I learned from each year and was able to put those new rules into effect at the beginning of each school year so as to head off any issues but as a parent you don't get a fresh start with a new child every September.  Of course you can add things whenever you need to and the only explanation you really need is "because I said so" but I have learned that birthdays are the best way to incorporate new routines.  For example, when Ellie gets to move into a big girl bed with sheets, blankets and pillows she will then become responsible for making her bed in the morning starting on her next birthday.  So if she transitions into a big girl bed during her 3 year old year then on her 4th birthday she will start making her bed.

These are just some things that I have had on my heart for a while.  I have always had the philosophy that life is as hard as you make it.  So if you want parenting and raising a child to be easy - plan for it to be easy and take the steps necessary to achieve that. Try to be PROactive, to have some foresight and ideas of expectations for what you want your child to be like and then enforce it consistently - with your teammate.  If you want it to be difficult then be REactive without a plan.  It's never to early to start and if you are getting a late start have no fear a lot of work now will make it easier in the long run.

This Weekend

This was the weekend of no naps. Okay so maybe that isn't entirely true.

We had some running around and Ellie fell asleep in the car both Saturday and Sunday. But then when we pulled into the driveway her eyes popped open and she was up. We tried having some quiet time in her room so she could rest some more but she just wasn't having it. No tantrums or crying just super busy and playing. She seemed to be just fine and her attitude was pleasant, so no complaining.

We hit up TJ Maxx and got Ellie some more sippy cups, much needed since she is "chewing" on the spouts and they are no longer leak proof.  I did some research and it's cheaper to buy new ones than to replace the spouts. And you can see how she likes to ride in the shopping carts now.

We got Ellie a slide for Christmas (because she loves slides and so she pulls have something she is allowed to climb on). She has become quite proficient at climbing and being dangerous on it. It finally happened on Saturday, girlfriend fell off the slide. She likes to stand on top of the slide and then smiles and laughs when we tell her to sit down, then she sits and goes down the slide properly. Not on Saturday. I told her to sit down, which she tried but her butt landed on the side rail of the slide and right on over she went. She started crying when she landed. My first instinct was to pick her up and hold her to comfort her, but my first aid response one over and I wanted to make sure that there was no neck injury so I waited for her to move her arms and legs and roll over by herself. Was she demonstrated she could move her arms and legs and rollover we picked her up and culture and loved on her and about 45 seconds later she calm down and was ready to go down the slide again.

I finally finished my book last week I was reading the first five books of the Wizard of Oz series, have started reading a new one called "To Kill a Mockingbird".  I was supposed to read it freshman year of high school but I don't think I read very many pages. I've heard so many people talk about this book that I truly think I'm missing out so since I found it for $.50 at the Goodwill decided to get it and start reading it.

We finally put all of our Christmas decor away and we have so much more room in our house!  It always feels so refreshing  to put away the decor and see all that extra clean space! Although next year is going to be pretty cool since we took advantage of the after Christmas sales and got a bunch of lights for the outside for next year! Ellie actually didn't seem to be too sad about the Christmas trees going away and just totally took it in stride.

How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun?

F R I D A Y

Somehow it's Friday and Christmas is almost officially out of our house. I like to wait until Epiphany to clear it all out mostly because I think I should have Christmas decor out for longer than my halloween stuff. Ellie is going to be so sad when our trees "disappear" but I'm sure she will get over it.

ONE

I am hoping to simplify things in our home this year. I started with Christmas actually by not putting out all my decor and I have a confession I liked it better. My house seemed cleaner but just as festive!  So organization is one of my main goals, oh and de-cluttering, this year.

TWO

The Walking Dead has been playing in our house since the first episode premiered. I have been present in the room for almost every single episode but not always paying attention (thank you blogging, IG and FB). However, I watched the last season this fall and needed to know more. Thankfully AMC had my back and had a marathon on New Years and Thomas made sure to record them for me. I am addicted. Things are making so much more sense now and I cannot wait for February 8 to get here. I mean I can wait but can't, you get me right?

THREE

Life on the Parsons Farm

Toddler Tuesday is coming back to the blog and I would love to have some more guest bloggers sharing your experiences! If your interested just shoot me an email and I will get you scheduled!!

FOUR

I don't know what it is but something about the new year gives me the inspiration to start planning Ellie's birthday! I know I have until May so it's a ways off but I am just so excited to pull it all together.  I was flipping through my December issue of Martha Stewart and saw this cake that is the inspiration for Ellie's party. Not sure if I'm going to make the cake myself or source it out but I'm just so excited about it!!

FIVE

Speaking of planning things for Ellie, I really want to start transitioning her into her "big girl" room. Due to our finances it has to be done on the cheap but that is totally ok. When we designed (I use that word very loosely) her nursery we had to have it be very gender neutral since we were adopting and couldn't be sure what we would come home with - so I want to make sure her toddler room is extra girly with a hint of rustic/country and vintage.

Little Things

I know that I posted this picture earlier this week but I cannot get enough of it.

Ellie absolutely LOVED having her Dada home for two weeks over the holidays.  Watching their love grow for each other is just the best.

Thomas had to go back to work on Monday and since we were home all day yesterday (thanks stomach bug) she kept running down the hall to our bedroom yelling "Dada Dada Dada" and banging on the door.

And then when he finally came home she ran into the kitchen to meet him and was so excited she barely left his side for 2 hours!!

These two melt my heart and I am so grateful for them.

Tuesday Confessional

I can't seem to find the post now, (about some of my fears) but that could be due to me being somewhat delirious with catching the bug that Ellie had on Sunday.  Luckily she recovered quickly only abou 6 hours of sickness. And she couldn't help herself in posing for a quick photo shoot!!

I am dying over floral on the babe - and really want some for myself!

It was a day like today that I was actually thankful that we just have Ellie - not sure how I would have survived today with two or more...Ellie was a total champ. She played by herself and really didn't get into too much trouble while I was in and out of sleep on the floor. I also brought her into her room since it's more confined and there really isn't anything "off limits" in there. I woke up to find her asleep on the floor near the door way! What a sweetie!

I cannot tell you how much more relaxed I am that I'm no longer teaching. I posted about my dislike of meeting new people and the anxiety it gave me. That was not a trait I wanted to pass on to Ellie, especially since she is so naturally friendly! So I knew I needed to work on it. I reflected a lot and notched that my "stranger danger" was due to the inconsistency and instability of my profession (since I kept getting laid off due to budget cuts). I started to work on it last spring when I decided to attend MOPs. I was unsure if it was something I wanted to continue but when the first meeting date came around in October I just knew I had to do it. And I'm so glad I did. I'm still fairly reserved but it feels so good. I also went out on a total limb to attend a friends Pinterest Party, the host was the only one I knew and I actually had a great time. I'm so glad to be reaching out. I know for a fact that my anxiety was tied up in teaching (and also the loss of my mom, horse and four miscarriages PTSD?) I am so glad with the career change I've made and that I have made these changes to better both my life and Ellie's!!!

Another confession, which y'all probably already know: I'm short, like 5' short. I have totally embraced this and love it even more because I can get clothes and shoes on discount (ie children's section) I learned this weekend the extra bonus is that Ellie and I can totally twin it up! See below, thank you kids section!

Oh and today is Epiphany. So that means that Christmas is officially over on the farm here and it's time to start cleaning it all up, de clutter, and organize our life a little more!

Sunday, January 4, 2015

Hello 2015!

I'm It's already January. I'm not quite sure how that happened. But alas here we are. It's still "Christmas" on our farm and will remain that way until Epiphany (January 6th - the twelfth day of Christmas, the day the magi found Jesus)

These two get me every time!

The great thing about January is that it's a new year, a time to hit the refresh button and a chance for something new or to make some changes. However, you can do this at anytime.

We are starting our new year off a little bit rough...Ellie is throwing up for the first time today, poor babe. We've been lucky though to have gone 19 months before a vomit episode. Thankfully Thomas doesn't go back to work until tomorrow so we can take turns snuggling!

We've been talking about things we want to accomplish in this new year. Call them resolutions or goals I don't think it much matters. But whatever they are we want to make them attainable and realistic. I tend to be an overreacher, and set way too many goals in too short of a time period. Our list is a combination of home, personal, and family.

So here is our list (of sorts):

• makeover our master bath - painting cabinets, trim, and doors. DIY frames on mirrors. New floor. Fairly simple I think!

• recover the chairs in our living room. I got them on consignment nearly 5 years ago and the cheap fabric has been worn and ripping for the past three years. It's time - just need to choose the right fabric.

• paint the exterior of our home (a dark grey with white trim)

• replace all our baseboard. We have piles of reclaimed baseboard in our garage from Thomas' brothers old house, we just need to paint it white and nail it in. It's been chilling in our garage for about 4 years and we keep talking about it but haven't made it a priority.

• prepare and eat more balanced meals. Basically more fruit and veggies, less desserts. In an effort to be more healthy

• go on family walks or at least be more active.

• go on a family outing once a month (zoo, aquarium, something out of the ordinary)

• get together with family more often (once a month or so for dinner) to encourage relationship between ourselves and for Ellie.

What are some things you are working on for this year?

Goodbye 2014 - a year end review

2014 wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. In an effort to be more positive I chose to focus on the bits and pieces that were sunshine and rainbows but who am I kidding? I'm human and of course those dark moments hit me and consumed me at times.

With all the sadness and BS aside I really did have a lot of fun this year and it was a huge year for growth both personally and blog wise. I have had an incredible amount of traffic, new followers, and comments on nearly every blog post that it truly just makes my heart swell!  I feel so honored and blessed that so many of you take the time to ready little place of the internet and that you have stuck with me!  I've had this blog for a long time but just recently I've gotten into the groove of content, inspiration and direction. In addition I am so happy with the connections and friends I have made over the last year.

A few things to note: I didn't really post about it but I entered A LOT of giveaways this last year both on blogs and IG and I actually won quite a few of them, I matured a lot this year and have a new perspective on life (and a lot more confident), and I'm finally getting back in stride with life and how to enjoy it.

JANUARY

We started the year off with me making a resolution to Meal Plan, we didn't do a meal plan for every week this year but I would say we did for at least 43 weeks which is actually really good for a New Year's Resolution.  I didn't always post our meal plans (nor did we follow them to a T) but they were so incredibly helpful to have.   I talked about some of my infertility struggles here and here,  I also started thinking about, getting inspired and planning Ellie's First Birthday Party and shared 5 Things My Mom Taught Me.

FEBRUARY

A home decor collage from February 2014

I started the month out with a Blogger Meetup and the Seahawks winning the Super Bowl here. We had Ellie's dedication at church, then Thomas and I went on our first real date since adopting Ellie. I shared What Not To Say to the Infertile , I was nominated for a Blog Award, talked about Transitioning Ellie to Solids, and shared our newborn to 3 months Favorites.

MARCH

This was a tough month. It marked 2 years since my mom lost her battle with brain cancer, I turned 30, and then I had to put down my horse 3 days after my birthday.  Some fun things that happened: I shared my Favorite Kitchen Items, as well as our 3-6 month baby favorites and 6-9 month baby favorites. And I shared the recipe for my favorite Irish Soda Bread.

APRIL

I got to guest post over at A+Life, had a group of my students over to help as a farm crew cleanup and they accomplished so much for us! We also got to take Ellie on our annual trip to the tulip fields and she got her passport picture taken.  We celebrated her first Easter and I wrote some posts dedicated to National Infertility Awareness Week here and here.

MAY

I was reminded how LUCKY I am.  My sweet baby girl of a horse turned 11, I shared an OOTD post (I am by no means a fashion blogger) and shared our Guest Bathroom Makeover!! I hosted a bridal shower for my sister in law, I found out I was losing my job, celebrated my first Mother's Day, I confessed over at September Farm, Ellie turned ONE and we celebrated all day with a trip to the zoo, we hosted a birthday party for her, and we also took out some time to think about our sweet angel baby who would have made their appearance this month had I not miscarried. I also announced the Toddler Tuesday Series!

JUNE

Toddler Tuesday kicked off with Nat. I did a recap of Ellie's First Birthday Party, Thomas got to celebrate his second Father's Day, his birthday, I shared a recipe for our favorite rice dish, shared about our mini weekend getaway the end of the school year, and then our trip to Scotland and Ireland began.

My first Fix - Stitch Fix

I so wanted to try out a Stitch Fix when I first learned about them in the spring. But with the news that I was losing my job and had to look for employment, signing up just wasn't in the cards for me. I told myself that once I found a job and started working I could reward myself with a Stitch Fix. I found a new form of employment as a Nanny and finally my hopes came true and I signed up for one in the middle of November!!

What is Stitch Fix? It's the coolest concept. Basically you fill out a profile with your style and cost preferences and then direct to your style  board on Pinterest and you get a box of 5 items sent picked out by a personal stylist and sent right to your door. You don't have to buy any of the it's if you don't like them but they will charge a styling fee ($20). If you choose to keep an item they will take off your styling fee and a bonus if you keep all five items a 25% discount!!

I have seen several of my favorite bloggers post about their fix's and I can't wait to share mine!!

Happy Mail Day!
I was so excited when I opened up my box and saw the polyvore card and the sweet note from my stylist Lana!! The first thing I noticed on the card was the heart sweater at the bottom and prayed that I would like it on!!

I was also looking forward to trying on some floral since I'm in love with it for Ellie.

The first item I tried of was the faux leather jacket. I hated this. The fit was too tight in the shoulders, the waiste a little short and I couldn't get past the feeling of the faux. It was an item I definitely would not pick out myself and it's just not me. Maybe for someone else.

I was really looking forward to the floral top. I loved the blousiness of it and how it fit me. But ultimately once I got it on I felt like the pattern was just a little too matronly for me.
Looking back at the pictures I think I made the right decision in sending it back.

The next item I tried on were the distressed black demon pants. I loved the fit of these and have been looking for a new pair of black pants. They were a great length and just right around my waiste, I thought the distressing was fun but a little too over the top with my line of work (crawling on the floor with infants and toddlers) plus I might add a little more distressing than is socially acceptable!! I was so sad to send these back, I might have kept them if they were under $50 - but requested a similar pair for my next box just sans holes!

Finally I got to try on the sweater! It was love!! The fabric is so soft and light, I love the way it fits, that the sleeves are short (I'm always rolling my sleeves to this length) and the actual length of the sweater - I can wear it with leggings and feel comfortable and covered!  These is the type of tops I am in the market for.
I got to model all of these for Thomas and asked him which item he thought I should keep - hands down he said this sweater "it's got your be all over it" he said! Well done Lana on this sweater pick. I love it!!

The fifth and final item I tried on was this great infinity scarf with some birds on it. Now I love me some birds and some scarves. This had a great weight to it and the fabric was soft and smooth. It was super cute but I have a similar scarf in blue and a dress with the exact pattern in black. For the price it was just a little too high and my scarf drawer is overflowing with my collection (hoarding). So I sent it back.

Even though I only kept one item from this box I absolutely loved this experience and the items my stylist chose for me. I am so looking forward to my next box! Each box your stylest gets to know you better so she can pick out just the right items for you!!

Have you tried Stitch Fix before? If not and you want to please use my referral code here!! Thanks for helping a sister out!!

Our Christmas Day

To read about our Christmas Eve click here.

Christmas Day started super early for me.  I woke up around 5am and just decided to go with it! I left Thomas in bed with Ellie, since she refused the crib the night before. Then I played Santa with the stockings and Ellie's easel.

My plan was to get started on the cinnamon rolls I was wanting to make. I remember my mom making both cinnamon and orange rolls almost every Christmas morning and want to continue the tradition with Ellie (and future kiddos God willing). But procrastination took over and I chose to read up on some blogs and watch a hallmark Christmas movie - I'm a total sucker for those!

Before I knew it the family was up and I got started on the cinnamon rolls. Ellie walked straight to her easel and was so excited. We opened our stockings and Santa brought some great things! Ellie got a toothbrush, two pairs of shoes, some dry erase markers for the whiteboard, and an apple. We got some standard items in ours: toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, gum, and chocolates.  Then I got some shave cream and a great scarf while Thomas got some beef jerky and hair gel.

We got the water boiling for some French press coffee and started on the presents.  I got Thomas a super cool pair of boots and the cutest travel mug! He added to my kitchen hoarding with a new oven mitt and another baking sheet! We're going to need to move to a house with a bigger kitchen here pretty soon to hold all my collections. He also got me some really cool vegetable garden markers I can't wait to use, some leggings and another scarf! I'd say this guy really loves me!!

 Already quite the artist!
Family selfie in front of the tree
This girl cracks me up!!

After we had a chance to enjoy our quiet morning of a family of 3, Thomas' parents came over to give Ellie her BIG gift! The most adorable table and chair set. We had Ellie go into the playroom with Nanny while Papa and Daddy brought it in (I was finishing up the cinnamon rolls) then we videotaped Ellie walking out to see her table. She loves it!!
Then we told her she was going to Disneyland and she got a big smile on her face - though I'm pretty sure she has no idea what this means! Girlfriend is blessed for sure!
We had fun playing with "cors" aka colors aka crayons.
And enjoyed eating my first ever cinnamon rolls. I made a double batch - the second half is in the freezer and are going to turn out much better! But these were so good!
After her nap we played with some more "cors" and got ready to go the Christmas with my family.
My sister hosted this year and it was so fun to see Ellie interact with all my family (we don't see each other very often). We brought her piano with us and it kept her quite busy!
With great grandma above (my moms mom)
And cracking up with Grandpa (my dad he got that hat while we were in Scotland this summer) and great grandpa (my moms dad)
And then posing with my aunt (my moms sister). It's a miracle we even got this picture since my aunt always hides from the camera - Ellie has a gift!!
We had a great meal of homemade pasta and a chicken dish - my sister is a great cook just like my mom.
Then we opened some more presents and Ellie continued to get blessed. She got an adorable owl headband, some "cors" (that's all she wanted to do the rest of the night), a rubber ducky, reusable stickers, play doh, and a gift card to toysrus. I got a Nordstrom gift card and I'm so excited to go shopping in Bellevue with it!! Thomas got a dvd set of Drunk History.
Another family selfie!
And a photo with my babe - new scarf and boots!!

We had a very blessed Christmas! How was yours?

Christmas Eve Recap

Christmas is over!! All that waiting and planning and waiting and preparing and waiting has all come to an end.

We had the most fabulous holiday and Ellie was blessed for sure!! (I prefer blessed over spoiled because I feel the latter has negative connotations.)

I had to go into work at church (I work in the childcare) for an hour so Ellie came with me so that Thomas could finish up her easel. Girlfriend is short so we needed to chop down the legs so she can reach the chalkboard!! Then Ellie had a stellar nap (almost 3 hours!). She woke up with a wicked cough that really scared her but after a cracker, some milk and a chewable medicine tab she was a happy camper. We got dressed and ready for the evening.

This year we had it at Thomas' parents house and we had their traditional Prime Rib dinner. Before I started dating Thomas I didn't like Prime Rib!! I have no idea what was wrong with me. We served it with potatoes, carrots, and rolls. It was beyond delish. Ellie did great sitting in her high chair and eating the meal (potatoes and carrots being the stars). Then our desserts were a bunch of little bites: rice crispy treats, Buckeyes, and peanut butter blossoms. Ellie is a huge PB fan so the blossoms were her favorite minus the chocolate kiss of course.

It was so much fun for Ellie to spend time with her Aunt, Uncle, cousins (Thomas' other brother and wife were out of town) and great grandma! Ellie was definitely feeding off of her cousins energy and did get in trouble for continuing to run into the kitchen (that was busy with lots of cooking - hot stoves and open ovens) after I had told her stop. Ellie is quite the observer these days and is picking up all sorts of things from the other kids I watch - like the funniest scrunch face ever!

After dinner we all sat around the tree and opened presents.
I wanted Ellie to be aware of who gave her which gifts so before we opened them we looked at the tag and then the gift giver and blew a kiss for a thank you and repeated after we opened the gift.
Girlfriend loved opening the gifts - a real wrapping ripper!!

Ellie got some musical instruments: maracas, a tambourine, a kids keyboard, cymbals, and a wooden clapper. She also got an adorable outfit, matching scarf with me, a cute little sheep stuffed animal (Baa's are her favorites right now). Thomas and I recieved a one year Costco membership! I got a matching scarf with Ellie, and a great pair of boots!! Thomas got a gift card to Bass Pro Shops and a Bear Grylls utility/survival knife!

Once presents were all done, Ellie had an outfit change and we were off to church for the candlelight service. Ellie was fairly well behaved. We did have to take her out to run around a bit and she found the door to the stage...but she is a good listener and turned around to come back to me when I told her to. And once again I'm convinced we have a future pyro on our hands. Ellie cried when we blew out the candle for her to hold!!

Then it was back home to go to bed and see if Santa came!  Ellie was so jazzed up from the nights festivities that sleeping in her crib was out of the question (after four attempts) so into our bed she came. And just talked and babbled for a good 10 minutes before finally settling down.

Check back tomorrow for our Christmas Day Recap! How was your holiday?
